FormSprint Release 200701 Now Available
Isle La Motte in Lake Champlain
As September rolls around, we are often asked what we did over the summer. Well, we here at ICS have
been busy putting together the 200701 newest release of FormSprint. The release is now ready and if you haven't already received your copy, give us a call or drop us an email requesting your update. We
can send you the update on CD, or you can download from the website, just let us know what you'd like.

Read on to find out what's new.
Archive Database System Enhancements
Sunset on Lake Champlain
Based on user feedback, some significant modifications have been made to the Archive Database Module.

These modifications include assignment of search parameter names when the database is initially
created and then retrieval of the parameter names when a new database is created from the same form definition. So if your database is created based on dates, for example, there is no need to go into the Archive program and re-input the parameter names once the new database has been created.

The output formtype defined in the original form definition is now carried through to the archive document printing. So if your document prints on perforated paper, for example, the formtype PERF could now be carried to the printing from the Archiver.

Documents printed from the Archiver could already be sent directly to email or fax (if these products are installed on your system) and now there is the option to output the retrieved document directly to a PDF file in the IFS (FormSprint CV or KeyesPDF must be installed on the system).

USPS Intelligent Mail (4 State) Barcode
Shelburne FarmFormSprint now fully supports the new 4-State Customer Barcode allowing the user to uniquely identify the sender and the mail piece and provide a destination ZIP code for sorting and routing as well as
encode special service indicators such as Address Change Service request. Please refer back to the
June newsletter for more information on this important new feature.
Extract the User Defined Data Area
Mount MansfieldThe extract function has been expanded to include the User Defined Data Area (USRDFNDTA). The User Defined Data Area gives the user a large space to pass data to  FormSprint. While the USRDFNDTA contains up to 257 characters, 240 are available to FormSprint. This field could be used to pass information to the form definition that wouldn't otherwise be contained within the spool file. For example, if your application software does not provide for vendor email addresses or fax numbers, these could be passed in the USRDFNDTA field. Or, you could pass the name of a destination output queue which could be extracted and used with dynamic distribution.
Other Stuff
  • Ever want to use the Univers (san serif) font for variable data but couldn't because it is a proportional font and you loose your columns?  Try Letter Gothic.  It is a fixed pitch font so you can control the characters per inch and not loose your columns but, bolded, it is hard to distinguish from Univers.
  • To print a 132 character report portrait, change the  font pitch to 16.5.  The font must be a fixed-pitch font.  The printable area across the page in portrait is 203 millimeters.  Divide that by the number of characters (203/132=1.5378 mm) to get the width per character.  Then divide that character width into 25.4, the number of millimeters per inch (25.4/1.5378=16.5).  To find out what point size looks good with that pitch divide 120 by the pitch (120/16.5=7).
We hope you've found something useful here and please forward this to other System i users you think might benefit from FormSprint.  We're always on the lookout for new customers.

Sincerely,
Betsy Andrews

Typical New England farm

Our family is very lucky to have a family home in Vermont on the island of Isle la Motte, Vermont on beautiful Lake Champlain. The family roots go deep as does our love for the state of Vermont. Each year many members of the family gather for summer vacation and time to reconnect with one another. For those of you who are not familiar with New England, I hope these pictures give you a bit of the feel for this lovely part of our country.
